Doctor says two women accusing him of sexual assault ‘mistaken’
A doctor has claimed he was “shocked and very upset” after being accused of sexually assaulting two women during medical examinations.
Matthew Adam, 36, denies the allegations made against him from the women, aged 26 and 47.
He is accused of touching the first woman at a medical centre in Forfar, Angus, where he was a partner, on January 12, 2015.
Adam is also alleged to have repeatedly groped the second woman during a home examination on December 6, 2015.
He was giving evidence at his trial at the High Court in Glasgow.
His QC Ronnie Renucci asked: “How did you feel about the allegations... made?”
Adam replied: “I was absolutely shocked and very upset by that.”
The court heard Adam, a doctor since 2009,
claimed to have conducted an abdominal examination on the 26-year-old woman who complained of stomach pains as she was lying on a bed.
The doctor told jurors the examination involved prodding and rubbing of the body from the lower ribs to the patient’s pelvic bone.
He insisted he “absolutely” did not go further down her body.
The woman earlier told jurors that Adam had become aroused during the alleged assault.
His QC Ronnie Renucci asked if she was mistaken and Adam replied: “Yes.”
The lawyer then asked Adam about the complaint that was made against him by the woman.
Adam said: “I was quite shocked about it as I did not perceive there was a problem about the consultation.
“I certainly didn’t want to upset anyone or cause any upset.”
Adam told jurors he carried out another abdominal examination on the second woman at her home as she lay on the sofa.
Mr Rennuci said: “Did you make contact with her private parts?” and Adam replied “No.”
The lawyer said: “When she said you did, is she wrong?” Adam again answered “No.”
The trial continues.
