Struggling Loons eight points adrift at bottom

-

Forfar and Clyde battled out an old fashioned relegation six-pointer at Station Park last night.

And the 3-1 defeat for the Loons – currently under the caretaker management of Gary Irvine – leaves the Angus club eight points adrift at the foot of League One and staring automatic relegation firmly in the face.

The first half had the intensity to match the stakes but chances were few and far between in the opening stages.

The game became even more frantic after 38 minute when Jordan Allan was freed down the wing and delivered an inch perfect cross for Scott Fenwick, who tapped home to give Forfar what should have been a crucial lead.

The elation for the home side was short-lived, however, as Clyde were level less than 60 seconds later.

Before anyone had time to take in what had happened, David Goodwillie raced through on goal and fired at Marc Mccallum.

The Forfar keeper could only parry the ball on to the post and Lewis Jamieson was on hand to bundle home the rebound and restore parity.

It was a moment of real quality that separated the sides in the second half.

Jamieson was again the provider for Clyde when he skipped past three men in blue and fired the ball into the bottom corner.

Clyde were to hammer the final nail in Forfar’s relegation-shaped coffin in the 82nd minute. Sub Martin Mcniff was virtually the only red shirt in the box for a corner but he managed to power a header off the bar. Fellow sub Josh Jack steamed in to lob the rebound over Mccallum and into the top corner.

The defeat leaves the Loons destined for League Two, eight points adrift of safety with 12 to play for.
