No goals at the Glebe as Blue Brazil stay eight in front of City

-

Brechin City and Cowdenbeath fought out a 0-0 draw in a hard fought and uncompromising encounter at Glebe Park last night.

The result keeps the Blue Brazil eight points ahead of City with four games remaining and it will be a miracle now if the Glebe Park men can avoid finishing bottom of the table with the prospect of the pyramid playoffs, should they get the goahead, looming large.

City started brightly with Connor Coupe sending a 20-yard drive over the bar within the first minute but as the half wore on, the Blue Brazil took a grip of proceedings and began to dominate.

Veteran Cowden striker Iain Russell came close with a header in the 11th minute and David Hutton saved a Graham Taylor shot 11 minutes later.

Brechin were defending resolutely and Hutton came to his side’s rescue just before the break when he brought off two tremendous saves in quick succession to deny Russell and Robby Buchanan.

Cowdenbeath threatened right at the start of the secondhalf with Kieran Inglis heading a Craig Barr corner off the line within the first minute but City hit back immediately with Michael Paton firing in a shot which went narrowly over the bar, and they had a half-chance again in the 68th minute when Cowden keeper Nicky Hogarth palmed away a Chris Mckee shot.

The visitors then regained the initiative with Hutton doing well to keep out shots from Renton, Buchanan and Barr but play swung quickly to the other end with Hogarth bringing off a fantastic save to tip an Inglis drive round the post.

The visitors hit back and Hutton was again called into action, diving to his left to keep out a Barr header, with an Alex Miller drive hitting the post seconds later.

● Queen’s Park – managed by ex-brechin, Raith Rovers and Dundee United boss Ray Mckinnon – secured the Scottish League Two title with a 0-0 draw at home to Elgin.
