Former nurse and midwife Lilian Whyte

DUNDEE WOMA N Lilian Victoria Whyte has died in Moyness Nursing Home, Broughty Ferry, at the age of 100.

Lily was born in Blyth, Nor thumberland, the second eldest of seven children, including twin sisters.

She trained as a nurse at Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle and then did midwifery training in Edinburgh.

This led her to district and private nursing in Forfar and Dundee.

Her husband, David Kirk Whyte, who died in 1994, was from Cardenden and had worked there and on the Gold Coast as a mining engineer.

They met on the Isle of Man and were married in Dundee in April 1939.

Dave bought the newsagent, confectionery and tobacconist shop at the foot of Barrack Street where Lily also worked until the 1960s when the shop was demolished to make way for the then new Overgate Shopping Centre.

She returned to nursing, initially at Dundee Royal Infirmary and thereafter at Ninewells Hospital at the Special Care Baby Unit, where she worked on Saturday and Sunday nights until she retired.

Lily has three children — David, Lilian and Jean — eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, aging from over one to nearly 21.

She celebrated her 100th birthday in May with family and other residents at Moyness Nursing Home after receiving her card from the Queen presented by the lord provost.
