Cove complete cup misery for Montrose

-

COVE RANGERS 3 MONTROSE 0

Montrose finished their Betfred Cup campaign without a point after going down to Cove at Station Park, Forfar, last night.

They managed just one goal in Group D and will be glad to see the back of the competition.

They were left chasing the game after losing an early goal and Cove finished comfortable winners to gain their first points.

The Links Park side started well with Graham Webster having the first serious effort on goal but Cove took the initiative and, after winning three corners in quick succession, Stuart Walker opened the scoring after 14 minutes.

Montrose hit back with Paul Watson a constant threat but Stuart McKenzie was rarely called into action in the Cove goal.

Mitch Megginson almost doubled Cove’s advantage two minutes from the break but Jordan Millar saved well.

It was Megginson who grabbed Cove’s second goal after 58 minutes and Millar was again called into action shortly afterwards to deny Jonathan Smith.

The Highlanders did not take their foot off the gas and won a string of corners.

Montrose tried to change things by introducing Ryan Ferguson and Ross Lennie but to no avail.

Cove sealed the victory through Daniel Park with 12 minutes left to complete Montrose’s misery.
