GSK Montrose

-

The Montrose plant manufactures ingredients for a number of GSK’s medicinal products.

In 2001 GSK began to reduce its workforce following a decision to sell its factory.

Dutch firm Diosynth pulled out of a deal to buy the plant in 2003.

In 2004 GSK told its workforce the company would cease operations in the town in 2006.

The closure was postponed until 2007 to meet increased demand for a flu vaccine.

In 2006 GSK announced a £25m investment in Montrose. GSK’s decision to invest £110 million at its Montrose site is fantastic news for Angus.

The site makes the ingredients for some of GSK’s top-selling asthma medicines and products in its HIV portfolio.

With almost 65 years of manufacturing experience, the Montrose site is the largest employer in Angus – with 460 permanent staff and more than 200 contractors – contributing more than £40m to the economy each year.

There were fears that firms like GSK may move their headquarters after Brexit.

Yesterday’s massive vote of confidence in Montrose, and in GSK’s other UK operations, resoundingly answers these concerns.
