Company-Sergt Major Beverley, Newtyle, who has had a long and honourable association with the Volunteer and Territorial movements, enjoyed one of the proudest days of his life on Saturday, when he was publicly presented with the DCM amongst his “ain folk” by the Earl of Strathmore. The Earl, before pinning the medal on the breast of GSM Beverley, said it was a duty he had undertaken with the greatest pleasure because Newtyle had for a long time been connected with Glamis in a military sense.

Hail storms, torrential rain and thunderstorms hit Angus yesterday. Traffic on the Dundee-Forfar Road was delayed briefly near Kerbet Bridge where the flooded road was covered by an inch of hailstones. In Forfar very heavy rain in the afternoon flooded many roads as the drains quickly filled up. Traffic was reduced to a crawl and at the height of the storm several roads were almost impassable as the flood waters poured out of drains and manholes. The glens also had brief, violent showers.

Dundee’s first heart transplant patient, Mr Ronald Bennett, of Broughty Ferry, has returned triumphant to the city with a hat-trick of gold medals after a successful weekend at the Transplant Games in Glasgow. Picking up three gold medals for swimming, he was also awarded the Victor Ludorum trophy for the top performing swimmer at the games and won himself a place in the British Team in the World Games in Budapest next month. He underwent his life-saving transplant surgery in 1988.

Adventurer Mark Beaumont led cyclists out of St Andrews on the next leg of the Countrywide GreatTour. The Perthshire cycling champion joined James Dowling, Alistair Cope and his son James, who are completing the whole of the charity challenge, circumnavigating all 4,163 miles of Britain’s coastline over 64 days. The trio have been joined by others along the route, with around 30 cyclists making the journey from the Old Course Hotel to Musselburgh on day 26 yesterday.
