A cyclist has been seriously injured in a collision involving a Nissan Qashqai in Kirkcaldy.

The 54-year-old man was taken by ambulance to Victoria Hospital after the accident, which happened where Oriel Road meets Wester Bogie Road at around 12.30pm yesterday.

Although his injuries were serious, they were understood not to be life threatening.

The driver of the Qashqai was not injured.

The police are investigating the crash and have appealed for witnesses.

Emergency vehicles with sirens blaring could be seen rushing to the scene around lunchtime.

A police spokeswoman said: “Fife road policing officers are appealing for witnesses after a 54-year-old male cyclist was seriously injured in a road traffic collision on Monday August 29.

“The collision happened around 12.30pm on Oriel Road at the junction with Wester Bogie Road when the cyclist and a Nissan Qashqai collided.

“The road was closed for a period of time to allow officers to investigate the circumstances of the collision and the public are thanked for their patience.

“The cyclist was taken to the Victoria Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.”

Sergeant James Henry of Fife Road Policing Unit said: “This collision has left a man with serious injuries and I would ask anyone with any information to please contact us on 101.”

Oriel Road was closed between the junction with Bennochy Road, where the collision happened, and Dunvegan Avenue. Diversions were put in place.

The road was reopened at around 3pm.

Witnesses took to Facebook, where they expressed concern for the cyclist on the Fife jammer locations page.

Local woman Christine May raised concerns about the safety of the road.

She said: “I’m a recent returner to cycling and used the cycle path at Oriel Road for the first time last week.

“I had to demount at every junction on the way down and on the way back because of the volume of traffic turning.

“Traffic has to turn in and out of streets but it does put cyclists at increased danger.

“Obviously, if the cycle path was at the other side of the road, where there is no traffic and no turns, that would be a lot easier.” arobertson@thecourier.co.uk
