Solo flight in lift

-

“I really enjoyed looking at the 200 years magazine,” writes Margaret Barrie of Dundee. “It brought back memories of when I went to work for DC Thomson, Albert Square in 1945.

“First I was in the jobbing department where I had to do lift work when the operators were on tea break. I then moved to the front office where G. Tuite was my boss and I found office work was my forte.

“During the war, the company published The Thomson V Book – filled with news from the employees who were in the services and also gave information about the present employees in all departments.

“When I operated the lift I remember DC Thomson came in in the morning and the lift was for him alone – coming and going.

“I left the firm in 1947 for a change of job, but have happy memories.

“I remember when one of the employees, Fred Cairncross, came back from the services and we young girls in the office thought he was so handsome – I suspect that quite a few had a crush on him!

“I still have my copy of the V Book.”
