More than just machinery

-

Tayforth Machinery Ring started in 1989 as a way for farmers in Courier Country to share equipment and labour in an effective way. However, since then it has grown to a multi-purpose farmers’ co-operative ring with 75% membership of the famers in their coverage area.

Tayforth Machinery Ring uses its size to bulk buy fuel for its members at great prices. Annually, they get 15 million litres of fuel for its members.

And it’s not just fuel. So far this year, they have sourced 10,000 cubes of concrete – a massive amount. Members can also take advantage of deals, including 16% off Toyota Hilux vehicles.

Recently launched is the members’ app, which allows people to state their availability to work and also get quotes for labour and equipment. It is currently available for iPhones, and an Android version will be released soon.

Although all of the deals are done between members, the Ring office near Milnathort is the hub of the work. And with membership costing just £150 + VAT annually, many farmers use Tayforth as an “insurance policy” of sorts – not using it regularly, but retaining access to machines, labour and other goods and services on an “as and when needed” basis.

Members have used the Ring during periods of illness and injury, or if a machine breaks down, and recent examples include deals to ensure that harvests are finished on time.

Tayforth Machinery Ring boasts a 95% or greater success rate when it comes to matching suppliers with demanders – meaning that on very few occasions can they not put the right members in touch with each other.

Tayforth is part of the Scottish Machinery Ring Association, a group of 9 Rings. These connections allow Tayforth to access services on the odd occasion they cannot provide them.
