There is a prospect of the usefulness of the Fife Mining School being extended in the direction of training discharged and disabled soldiers for work at power stations. That question was introduced by Mr William Low of Blebo, the chairman, at a meeting of the Fife and Kinross Education Committee held at Cupar. He said the manager of the Fife Power Company at Dunfermline had told him there was going to be considerable difficulty in getting men for the power station. 50 years ago A 26-year-old Woman’s Royal Army Corps sergeant, Elizabeth Hollingsworth, of Burntisland, a student at the army’s School of Electronic Engineering at Arborfield, Berks, was last night presented with a special prize as best student of the year in a nationwide competition sponsored by the Radar and Electronics Association. Sgt Hollingsworth received a cheque and books from Lord Renwick, the president, at the association’s annual dinner in London. Elizabeth joined the army in 1962.

Blind Date couple Sue Middleton and Alex Tatham, who first met three years ago in front of millions of television viewers, have become the match-making show’s first married couple. Show hostess Cilla Black was at the church near Walsall, to wish Sue (25) and Alex (26) “a lorra lorra luck.” The pair took their vows under the full glare of television cameras and roads were closed as around 1,000 well-wishers turned out. Sue and Alex are the first couple to make it to the altar in the show’s six year history.

The growth of Scotland’s creative industries could make the North Sea oil boom look “like a drop in the ocean”, an influential Westminster committee was told. Chris van der Kuyl, chairman of Dundee firm 4J Studios, warned that unless the UK “gets serious” about supporting the industry then Scotland faces missing out on the economic opportunities presented by the sector. He told MPs on the Scottish affairs select committee that Scotland needs to ensure it is not left behind.
