Dear Santa, please remember that naughty Lucy...

- Lucy Penman

Dear Santa, I’m not even going to pretend this year – I haven’t been particularly good. But I have had a lot of worries and challenges which I’m hoping you’ll take into account when considering my list: A relaxation technique that doesn’t involve alcohol: I know that this is where most people might request a spa treatment, but as you know, I find it difficult to submit to a massage due to my uptight nature and general issues with personal space.

I’m quite happy with a facial or a manicure but feel I would have to have a relaxation session to make me relax enough for a relaxing massage, which rather defeats the point.

However, because world events have left me very anxious this year I would be very grateful for something that would allow me to stop worrying quite so much about humankind hurtling towards hell in a handcart. If that’s not possible Santa, just something interesting to mix with prosecco for a relaxing festive cocktail might just do the trick.

Something sparkly: As you know Santa, I’m not a particularly girlie girl, but something comes over me at this time of year when I start craving all the glittery tat that appears in shops. Every year I think ‘Hopefully I’ll have grown out of this nonsense by next year’ but actually it seems to be getting worse.

I had to stop myself clicking on the + button when ordering a sparkly clutch bag (pink satin with diamonds) for a rather princessy seven-year-old niece.

I mean, it’s not something I’d ever use – or indeed have anything suitable to wear while carrying it – but I desperately wanted it. So maybe just a wee something that catches the light at certain angles would help my magpie tendencies. Cashmere bed socks: No explanation needed. The follow-up book to Letters of Note. My favourite present from last year was this amazing compilation of letters so I can’t wait to read the next volume.

Apart from my annual letter to you, I write very few letters nowadays, Santa, along with the rest of the world. And receive even fewer in return. These books remind me what I’m missing. Lots of love, Lucy x
