English Premier League side keen on United kid

Southampton have built an impressive reputation for talent identification.

Their director of scouting, Ross Wilson, started out at Falkirk and their head Scottish scout, Kevin Hamil, has been charged with identifying leading young talent north of the border.

Another young United defender – youth international Kieran Freeman – was snapped up by Saints in the summer and Courier Sport understands that the academy coaches are very pleased with his progress so far.

Robson has been with United since the age of 12.

He made his first team debut under Jackie McNamara in the League Cup and was given a contract extension through to 2018 by Mixu Paatelainen.

Robson had a short loan spell with Brechin City at the end of last season. He made six appearances in League One, scoring twice.

The full-back’s manager at Glebe Park, Darren Dods, believes Robson has attributes that will take him a long way in the game.

“He was excellent for us,” said Dods.

“He actually played most of his games as a right wing-back, even though that’s not his main position, and he scored two important goals by cutting inside. They were the winners against Stranraer and Forfar.

“He’s got pace, energy and uses the ball well. And even though he doesn’t look the biggest he’s a really tough tackler. I think he got booked in virtually every game he played for us! You need that aggressive side to your game, especially if you’re going to play in England.

“I watched the match against Hibs on Friday night and I thought Jamie was excellent.”

Robson has spoken previously about hoping to emulate another United left-back who has been a big hit in England – Andy Robertson.

“Hopefully I can progress like Andy,” he has said.

“He is a great player and I enjoyed watching him when I was a youngster just coming through in the first year of the 20s.

“I watched Andy training and in games here. I looked up to him and he’s done what I want to do, move down to England.

“It would be great to play in the Premier League and win trophies and medals.”
