Confusion surrounds Weir after grievances on Twitter

-

Six-time Paralympic champion David Weir is still to elaborate on his grievances towards British Athletics after expressing his frustration again yesterday.

The 37-year-old wheelchair racer took to Twitter, declaring he will never wear a British vest again.

But British Athletics were none the wiser, given Weir announced that April’s London Marathon will be his last race during his final, “terrible” Paralympics in Rio.

“I have been let down again,” Weir wrote on Twitter.

“Today is the day I officially retire from GB I will never put a shirt on again. #thanksBritishAthletics what a joke.

“I have just retired from GB I will still be at the London Marathon this year.”

Press Association Sport has contacted Weir and his representative, but he has declined to elaborate at this time.

Weir won four gold medals at London 2012, but did not reach the podium last September after missing the birth of his fourth child to compete in Rio.

He said Rio was his final track competition and he would finish his career on the road, where it started, rather than at July’s IPC Athletics World Championships at the London Stadium.

Weir declined to reveal the full reasons behind his dissatisfaction, but hinted at unhappiness with the support set-up within the athletics team.

Yesterday he questioned British Athletics’ response to his earlier tweets, sharing an online story in which British Athletics was said to be puzzled by his remarks. It also read that British Athletics had not spoken to Weir since Rio.
