Emergency services swooped on Levenmouth Police Station following the delivery of a suspect package.

Ambulance and fire crews joined marked and unmarked police vehicles at the scene after a parcel was received by the station yesterday morning.

People reported hearing a large number of sirens throughout the Methil area shortly after 10am.

The apparent severity of the situation was further highlighted by the arrival of command units from both the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance service.

However, the emergency was declared over soon after, with a preliminary examination of the package finding no harmful material inside.

An investigation has now been launched, with officers eager to trace the person responsible for sending the suspect parcel.

Confirming there had been no danger to the wider population, a Police Scotland spokesman said: “Following analysis of a suspicious package sent to Levenmouth Police Station on Tuesday January 17, it has been established the item is of no risk to the public.

“An investigation is now under way to identify the sender and establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.”

The alarm was raised at around 10.10am, with officers at the station requesting support from other emergency services.

Police stationed at the front of the Sea Road complex asked members of the public to stay away from the building before the all-clear was given shortly after midday.

Incidents of suspect packages being delivered in Fife are rare.

In 2015, St Andrews bus station was evacuated after an unidentified object was left at the station. However, further examination found it to be harmless.

But a 2011 delivery to Cowdenbeath FC chairman Donald Findlay QC was found to contain a knife.

Officers were sent to the scene when the incident occurred, but were later stood down.
