Police investigating the death of a hotel worker who was killed when he was struck by a van revealed yesterday that he had been on a night out with colleagues in the hours leading up to the tragedy.

Sixto Lopez Moreno died in hospital on Saturday evening after sustaining serious injuries on the A91, between the Manor Powis and Logie Kirk roundabouts outside Stirling, early in the morning of Monday January 9.

Mr Moreno, 35, who worked at Dunblane Hydro Hotel, had been enjoying a night out with work colleagues at a nightclub in Stirling on Sunday evening, and police are now attempting to figure out how he ended up on the A91 hours later.

The Spaniard, who lived in Dunblane but was originally from Cordoba, was struck by a white Mercedes Vito van which was travelling south towards Stirling near Powis Mains Farm at around 6am.

After sustaining serious injuries he was taken by ambulance to Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, where he died five days later.

Stirling Area Commander Chief Inspector Lynn Ratcliff said: “He had been at an event the evening before and was making his way home along a dark road. It’s a tragic set of circumstances for him, his family and the driver of the vehicle.

“The initial feedback was that his condition was not good but he began to improve over the weekend and his family were brought over from Spain. It was thought after surgery that he would survive.”

A spokeswoman for his employers, DoubleTree by Hilton Dunblane Hydro, said: “We can sadly confirm that one of our team members passed away on Saturday evening. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.”
