Wright determined to prevent cup shock

- Eric nicolson

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright won’t be mentioning the famous Scottish Cup shock that Stenhousemuir inflicted on the Perth side in 1995 in his Saturday pre-match team-talk.

But he’s sure his opposite number, Brown Ferguson, will.

“I have heard about that game but that was long before my time here,” Wright said.

“They will probably use it as a motivational tool, but I don’t remember it.”

Wright will ensure his players tick the right boxes to make sure McDiarmid Park isn’t the venue for a bit of fourth-round giantkilling.

“I went to watch them against Stranraer at the weekend and they did well,” he said.

“You know that something will happen at the weekend.

“A bigger team will get a slap in the face. A team will take the opposition for granted, not be at their best and the opposition will raise their game.

“We have to make sure there are no shocks at McDiarmid,” he added.

“I just know there will be shocks this weekend – that’s the nature of the cup – and we have to make sure it’s not here.

“We will make sure we go into the game with the right attitude and the ability to match their work-rate and desire.

“They will be up for it. But do that and our ability should come through to win.

“There is no way we are taking this game lightly. My players know the importance of the cup tie.”
