Driver killed in three-car collision near Guardbridge
tragedy: Man dies at the scene and two women taken to hospital for treatment
A man has died following a three-car collision in Fife yesterday.
The A91 between Guardbridge and St Andrews was closed off following the fatal crash, which occurred shortly after 3pm.
Three cars – a silver Mini One, a black Honda Civic and a silver Ford Mondeo – collided at the junction of the C4 Strathkinness road, around a quarter of a mile from Guardbridge.
The male driver of the silver Mini died at the scene, while a female passenger was taken to Ninewells Hospital for treatment for serious injuries.
The female driver of the Honda Civic was also taken to hospital for treatment, although her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The occupants of the Ford Mondeo were not injured.
Investigators remained at the site long into the night, with the route remaining closed until around 10pm.
Following their initial inquiries, officers have now launched an appeal for witnesses in a bid to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Sergeant Nicola Young of Fife road policing unit said: “This collision has tragically resulted in the death of a young man.
“Anyone who witnessed this incident or saw any of the vehicles prior to the collision is urged to contact the police by calling 101.”
The closure of one of north-east Fife’s busiest roads caused considerable disruption for motorists, with drivers attempting to travel between St Andrews and Guardbridge being diverted via Kincaple.
The route, which is also used by several buses, meant public transport also experienced significant delays.
It is understood that two female casualties, once extricated from their vehicles by paramedics, were taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee under a police escort.
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 15.08 hours today to respond to a road traffic collision on the A91 near Guardbridge.
“We dispatched three ambulances, a trauma team and an ambulance officer.
“The first unit was on scene at 15.09 hours.”
