Luncarty and Kelty see hopes end in fifth round

Cup ties: No Courier Country teams left in quarter-final draw

- MarK Johnson

The last two representatives from the Courier area went out of the Scottish Junior Cup at the fifth round stage.

Luncarty travelled to Ayrshire to take on junior giants Auchinleck Talbot but their journey came to an end as their hosts secured a place in the quarterfinals with a 4-0 win.

Bryan Young put Talbot in front midway through the first half but it wasn’t until the hour mark that Graham Wilson doubled the West Region side’s advantage. Six minutes later it was 3-0 through an own goal and, with the game already won, Wilson made it 4-0.

Kelty Hearts lost their first game of the season when they went down 2-1 to Kilwinning Rangers at New Central Park.

The visitors, who matched Kelty in every department and deserved to progress, went ahead when Ricky Hanvey got the last touch after 15 minutes. Ben Lewis doubled the advantage on the hour mark. Sean O’Neill pulled a goal back for the East Region Super League leaders but it was to prove no more than a consolation.

In the DJ Laing East of Scotland Cup Broughty Athletic will be hoping that they can transfer cup form to their League campaign after they made it two wins in two games with a 2-0 victory over Lochgelly Albert at Whitton Park.

The game was switched from Albert’s Gardiners Park due to drainage issues but the Super League side failed to take real advantage of being on their own patch.

Keith Gibson’s Broughty had the majority of play in the first half but had Iain Ross to thank for one brilliant save to deny the visitors the lead on 25 minutes. The deadlock was broken on 52 minutes when Kevin Buchan rifled a shot into the net from 25 yards.

The Super League side couldn’t put the game to bed until the last minute when James Collier converted a Buchan cut-back.

Linlithgow Rose put their league woes behind them as they were 7-1 winners over Thornton Hibs in a hastily re arranged Fife& Lothian sC up second round tie at Prestonfield after both sides’ original fixtures were postponed. Raymond Crichton netted Hibs’ goal. Dundonald Bluebell went out of the Fife & Lothians Cup at home to Musselburgh Athletic.

Bluebell were without Ricky Patrick, through suspension, and the trio of Sam Buchan, Barry Sibanda and Craig Wedderburn were cup tied.

Matti King got the decisive goal for the visitors seven minutes before half-time.
