Dundee artist wins award

-

A Dundee artist has won a prize worth £10,000.

Sarah Forrest, who was born in the city, attending Harris Academy and then Duncan of Jordanstone, has won the Margaret Tait Award for 2017.

The annual prize sees the artist awarded a £10,000 commission to produce a new work to be presented at Glasgow Film Festival in 2018.

Set up in 2010, the award is named after the late Orcadian artist Margaret Tait whose pioneering documentaries have influenced generations of film makers.

Now based in Glasgow, Sarah said the new work will begin with a period of research on the Isle of Lewis.

She said: “I will be looking initially at the island’s rich history of prophetic ‘second sight’,” she explains: “drawing from stories that I heard from my mother who grew up there.

“This work will build on recurring themes in my practice that look at appearance, perception, doubt and belief, with the commission being an exciting and significant opportunity for me to explore these in a longer form work.”
