Tribute key to soldier mystery?

-

It is hoped a mystery tribute can shed light on the story of a fallen Fife soldier.

When research was carried out on those named on the First World War plaque at Dairsie War Memorial Hall, no information could be found about Sergeant Robert Smith.

However, last week flowers were left with a card suggesting the benefactor knows at least a little of his background and what happened to him.

An appeal has been issued for the person who left the floral tribute to come forward so Sgt Smith’s tale can be shared and recorded in the community.

The message read: “In memory of Robert Smith, a son of Dairsie, killed Boon Ridge, 17.2.1917. His courage is remembered.”

Dairsie resident Blair Littlejohn said it was a “beautiful tribute” 100 years after the soldier’s sacrifice.

Mr Littlejohn was part of a committee that spent months back in 2014 poring over archives researching the Dairsie folk who gave their lives in battle.

Among the tragic stories they uncovered was that of a 13-yearold girl who died of fright when a bomb exploded near her.

Margaret Young Johnstone, from Cupar, suffered from a heart condition and fell at her mother’s feet when an incendiary device blew up at Craigfortune on November 1, 1940.

Mr Littlejohn asked the person who made last week’s tribute to contact him on 01334 870007.
