New research suggests that while primary school children have a voracious appetite for reading, interest soon drops off. The bald statistics, which show primary children are, by and large, challengin­g themselves with their book choices, many 16-year-olds have a “reading age” of just 13. The findings are as fascinatin­g as they are worrying. Now is the time to seek reasons for the dramatic gap – before it widens any further.
