Fir Park to stage United’s cup final

IRN-BRU CUP: Lunchtime kick-off as Tangerines are asked to travel west

- IAN ROACHE

Dundee United will head to Motherwell’s Fir Park to play their Irn-Bru Cup final against St Mirren.

The clash against the Buddies will be on Saturday March 25, with a 12.30 kick-off, and will be televised live on BBC Alba.

United fans are likely to be underwhelmed by the choice of neutral venue, with the bulk of the Tangerines’ support facing a 170-mile round trip to Lanarkshire.

By contrast, the Steelmen’s stadium is only around 25 miles from Paisley.

The hope would have been for a more equidistant venue.

Nevertheless, SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster was happy with the decision.

Doncaster said: “We are delighted to make today’s announcement that Fir Park will stage this season’s Irn-Bru Cup final, including making tickets available to fans from as little as £5.”

“We wish both clubs the very best of luck for the final and hope they produce a classic for supporters in the stadium and those watching live on BBC Alba,” added Doncaster

This will be the fifth time the Challenge Cup final has been played at Fir Park, the ground having also hosted the decider in 1990-91, 91-92, 93-94 and 97-98.

As mentioned by Doncaster, the organisers believe they have come up with a competitive pricing plan.

Adult tickets are priced at £20, concessions (13-18 years, over-65s and students) at £10 and under-12s at a fiver.
