Now you are engaged, the countdown to your wedding begins. While there’s no big rush to tie the knot, many people give themselves at least a year to plan their big day.

We have compiled a checklist for you to keep handy whenever you feel you are coming to the next important stage of your plans. And remember, these are just suggestions.

The most important thing is for you and your partner to enjoy the journey and make sure you’re both happy with the decisions you are making.

12 months to go: Set a date. Make a guest and reserve list. Agree your budget. Book ceremony and reception venue. Start shopping for a dress. 11 months to go: Book a photographer. Book the entertainment – such as the band. Order the cake. Choose bridesmaids, best man, pageboys and ushers. 10 months to go: Choose a dress and put down a deposit – often 50%. Choose your bridesmaids’ dresses. Scout suppliers. Send Save The Date cards.

Nine months to go: Organise a wedding gift list. Organise flowers. Book the honeymoon. Eight months to go: Confirm details with suppliers, especially caterers. Confirm arrangements for the ceremony. Seven months to go: Order invitations and envelopes, table stationery, favours and cake boxes. Organise flowers, including buttonholes and bouquets. Six months to go: Book transport. Make sure outfits are organised for the groom, best man and ushers. Choose the wedding rings. Five months to go: If you are changing your name apply for a new passport (you’ll need to allow at least six weeks). Book the hotel for your wedding night. If you haven’t already done so, order your wedding dress. Four months to go: Work out a seating plan for the main meal. Have a make-up session and a trial with the hairdresser. Remember your veil.

Three months to go: Send out invitations. Finalise guest numbers with caterers. Plan your hen and stag parties. Two months to go: Check whether you need visas or inoculations for your honeymoon and order foreign currency. Try on your entire wedding outfit. One month to go: Hold a rehearsal.
