Dundee University Choir and Orchestra
Caird Hall, Dundee March 26
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Dundee University and to celebrate the occasion, the university choirs and orchestra are putting on a concert on Sunday in the Caird Hall.
Music coordinator Graeme Stevenson has invited former members of both to take part and 2015 graduate Louise Thomson will sing the soprano solo in one of the works, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture, written as a thank-you for being awarded a doctorate by Breslau University, opens the concert with its final Gaudeamus, particularly fitting for the occasion.
While the first half of the concert is standard classical, the second half isn’t. Eric Whitacre’s Godzilla Eats Las Vegas is somewhat off the wall, and includes Elvis impersonators, rearing horn calls, huge orchestral blasts and an awful lot of fun for the performers.
