The price of liquor has gone up again in Kirkcaldy. The Kirkcaldy and District Licensed Trade Defence Associatio­n has agreed to the following increases – whisky, rum and gin increased to 8d per glass; special whiskies, 9d per glass; proprietar­y whiskies, 10d; brandy, 1s per glass; wines, 6d per glass; draught beer and stout, 7d per pint, 4 and a half penny per schooner, 3 and a half per half-pint or glass. The licensed grocers in town have also made increases to their prices.

Monifieth’s well-known golfer Iain D. Currie has been awarded a Frank Knox memorial fellowship to study at Harvard University, USA, in 1967-68. The value of this scholarshi­p is 2,000 dollars, plus fees. Iain, who was educated at Grove Academy, is studying mathematic­s in St Salvator’s College and is taking his Honours B.Sc in June. He expects to go to the US in September. Iain, the elder son of Mrs and Mrs J.S. Currie, is 21. He is an Angus County golfer and plays first man for St Andrews golf team.

Lava flowing from Mount Etna on the island of Sicily broke through a hastily constructe­d dam yesterday and rolled to within 300 yards of the first houses in a village of 7,000. Army lorries were prepared for a mass evacuation of Zafferana if a task force of US marines, Italian soldiers and volunteers failed to divert the lava in time. “The local people are desperate,” said the region’s bishop. “We all feel like ants in front of this grandiose, unpredicta­ble and haunting spectacle.”

Morrison’s Academy has been ordered to halt work on a controvers­ial new all-weather pitch after flouting planning regulation­s. Perth and Kinross Council slapped the school with a temporary stop notice when they began work on the artificial pitch at Dallerie without permission. Morrison’s Academy has submitted plans for two all-weather pitches with floodlight­ing and car parking at Dallerie sports pitches in Crieff. Objectors had warned that heavy rain floods the area.
