New ways to donate books in Fife

-

Two new book banks have been unveiled in Fife, providing a socially and environmentally friendly way to dispose of unwanted books.

Better World Books’ new banks in Beveridge Park car park, Kirkcaldy, and Asda St Leonards car park, Dunfermline, will help raise funds for Scottish Book Trust and Fife Council, as well as helping to keep Fife green and tidy.

Since the book bank programme was launched in Fife in 2013 almost one million books have been collected and sold online by Dunfermlinebased Better World Books.

Books across all categories in good or better condition can be donated, although ones that are stained, mouldy or have missing pages should be recycled.

Stephanie Newstead, environmental strategy officer at Fife Resource Solutions, said: “I’d like to thank the people of Fife for continuing to support this scheme.

“By using the Better World Books book banks at our recycling centres and points, they have not only supported Scottish Book Trust in improving literacy, but they have also helped reduce the amount of waste landfilled, which also reduces greenhouse gas emissions.”

Jane Mason, early years learning officer, said: “Reading is key to knowledge, and it is especially important for all children to be encouraged to enjoy books and stories from an early age, so that they can develop their understanding of the world and explore their creativity.”
