Scholarships awarded to inspirational young students
Five inspiring young students have been awarded scholarships to help them with their studies.
The Fife College students, who are all either young carers or have been in care themselves, were given Independent Living scholarships after showing commitment to their courses and 100% attainment.
Thomas Anderson, 16, from Perth; Robert Hamilton, 19, from Glenrothes; Brian Skirving, 17, from Glenrothes; Tamira Wood, 18, from Edinburgh; and Amy Rafferty, 17, from Lochore; were handed £100 each at a presentation at the college’s St Brycedale campus in Kirkcaldy.
Thomas, Robert, Brian and Tamira are all studying NC acting and performance while Amy is studying NC child health and social care.
All of them plan to use their scholarships to buy laptops and fund travelling to college.
The college’s Gaynor Jarrett said: “The Adam Smith Foundation was pleased to be able to widen the focus for this year’s Independent Living scholarship and encourage those who are young carers or have experience being care to apply.
“This recognises the college’s commitment to working with young carers and care experienced young people to support them with positive life chances and outcomes.”
She added: “The award winners were all extremely deserving and inspiring individuals who are hard working and passionate about their studies.
“I would like to congratulate them all on their achievements and wish them the very best on their future studies and careers.”
Robert Hamilton, who faced a number of challenges when he was younger, said he welcomed the support from the college.
