Much-needed win at home for Howe of Fife

-

They probably wish every Friday night was rugby night at Duffus Park.

Howe of Fife played their rescheduled BT National 1 match against Jed on Friday evening, the match produced 72 points but more importantly, Howe ran out 41-31 winners in the final match of their hugely disappointing league campaign.

Howe ran up a 27-12 lead with a couple of tries from Fraser Ellison and one each from Stephen Martin, Shaun Gray and Eden Cruikshank with Dom Martin landing a solitary conversion.

Nye Rees and Dom Martin ran in second-half tries, Martin converted both and although Jed did narrow the gap, Howe ended with a much-needed win.

Saturday saw Aberdeen Grammar visit Mayfield to face Dundee High in their re-scheduled BT National 1 fixture.

Dundee took the points with a 19-12 win having led 19-0 at the break with a couple of tries from Alasdair Mackie and one from Colin Strachan with Fraser McKay adding two conversions. Aberdeen hit back in the second half with tries from Alex Ratcliffe and Doug Russell, the second converted by Sam Knudson and the most either could take from this match was Dundee’s position in the league with the two home games to come against GHA and Jed possibly seeing them end up in a respectable fourth spot in the final table.

There was an air of last match frivolity about Kirkcaldy’s trip to the seaside to take on Ardrossan with a total of 91 points being scored as the Fifers won 57-34.

James Pow had a hat trick, Kurt Littlejohn a brace and one try each was added by Gav McKenzie, Josh Laird, Finlay Bruce and Alex Brooks with Craig Letham landing six conversions. That leaves Kirkcaldy ninth in BT National 2.

With only three wins from 21 starts and assured of relegation, it could only get more miserable for Perthshire and so it turned out as they crashed 54-17 away to Orkney.

The final matches of the season in BT Caledonia Division One produced disappointments for Carnoustie and Dunfermline, who both suffered heavy away defeats.

Carnoustie, who were already relegated, made the trip to meet Caithness and ended up on the wrong end of a 93-7 scoreline, while the Fifers went down 60-15 against newly-crowned champions Gordonians.

The Division Two (Midlands) programme also reached a conclusion, with Falkirk seconds welcoming Crieff & Strathearn in the one remaining fixture. Four unconverted tries gave the home side a 20-7 lead at the break and, although Crieff cut the gap to 2014 early in the second half, Falkirk bagged three more tries for a 39-19 win that means they finish second behind Grangemouth.
