All still to play for in final round of championship
Grove Menzieshill are one of three teams aiming to be first across the line in today’s final round of the Scottish Club Championship race, writes our women’s hockey correspondent.
Being one point off the pace, the Dundee outfit start second favourites.
The smart money is on Sam Judge and her Edinburgh University charges to make it three in a row of national league titles with a home win over near-neighbours Watsonians.
Under identical starters’ orders at Peffermill and Disc, Grove’s sole task is to focus on a second victory in a fortnight over Clydesdale Western while hoping for an upset in the form book elsewhere in the capital.
The top three secured play-off spots some time ago, with Wildcats also leaving the rest of the field behind to complete the quartet vying for a place in Europe next year.
Meanwhile, although the odds are stacked against Watsonians, MJV Wanderers have their own job to do at Dalnacraig against a Kelburne side hot on their tails.
One point would be enough to secure safety from the relegation pool play-offs, but Vikki Bunce and her stablemates will be going out for all three to open up the possibility of finishing fifth.
Cala’s race was over a long time ago. They take the drop, with Division 2 winners GHK moving upwards.
Grove’s second string should wrap up their Championship A campaign by posting their eighth win of an encouraging season against Haddington at Disc.
By contrast Kinross have had a tough time of it, finishing bottom of the pile. However, following this week’s launch of their astro pitch they can look ahead to a brighter future.
Perthshire and Dundee University II have found life difficult in Championship B, unlike St Andrews II who are comfortably mid-table before completing their schedule away to Grange A today and hosting Erskine Stewart’s Melville tomorrow. Result Midland Division 1 Brechin Thistles 5 Blairgowrie 0 (match conceded).
