Skerryvore
Byre Theatre, St Andrews April 30
Formed 12 years ago on the Isle of Tiree by local brothers Daniel and Martin Gillespie, and “holidaymakers” Fraser West and Alec Dalglish, both from Livingston in West Lothian, Skerryvore have gone on to occupy a unique place in Scotland’s music scene.
On the one hand they’re an unreservedly folk-influenced group, with fiddle, accordion and bagpipes all appearing in their songs; on the other, their mainstream rock inspirations are so pronounced that they’ve had words of support from Simple Minds.
Now a seven-piece based in Glasgow, Skerryvore’s origins are apparent in that name of theirs, which refers to a lighthouse off the coast of Tiree.
They’ve released five original albums and the Decade selection in 2015, a 10th anniversary celebration which spawned the band’s own annual Oban Live festival, while past live gigs have included a broad spectrum from T in the Park to representing the Scottish Government at the 2008 Ryder Cup in Louisville, Kentucky.
