100 years ago

The freedom of the City of London was conferred upon Mr Lloyd George, who had a cordial welcome from a large assembly in the Guildhall. Replying to the address of the City Chamberlai­n, the Premier said when he undertook to organise the resources of the country he did it to give our brave lads at the front a real chance and, thank God, they had got it. There was no better test of victory than prisoners and guns. The tide had turned and victory was becoming increasing­ly assured.

50 years ago

Holland rejoiced last night with the news that Crown Princess Beatrix had given birth to a boy, her first child. The baby, who is second in line to the throne, is the first Prince of Orange to be born to the Dutch Royal House for over a century. Holland has been ruled by women for three generation­s. The child was described as a “fine,well-made boy” and both mother and baby were said to be satisfacto­ry. A 101gun salute was fired and church bells began to ring throughout the country.

25 years ago

With more than 20 years of experience in first aid behind him, Forth Road Bridge toll collector Tom Matson, from Rosyth, had never been called on to help with a birth – until yesterday. The 51-year-old had to shut up his toll stance on the busiest lane, leaving a long queue of cars heading from Fife to sort themselves out when he got a radio message at 7am to go to the help of Mrs Melanie Anderson from Dalgety Bay. “It was an easy birth and all over in 20 minutes,” said Tom. “It was a beautiful wee girl.”

Three Vietnamese men accused of running a £185,000 cannabis factory at a self-storage unit have walked free – after the unavailabi­lity of an interprete­r led to a sheriff throwing out the charges against them just days after their arrest. Police raided an industrial unit in Auchtermuc­hty after a report was received of a “strong smell of cannabis” coming from inside. Police who entered the unit in the town’s Station Road found a cannabis growing operation with 600 mature plants and 240 seedlings.
