Scottish National Jazz Orchestra

Perth Concert Hall, April 28

- Brian donaldson

To describe Miles Davis as a jazz man is like calling Pablo Picasso a bit of a painter.

His influence similarly transcends boundaries and for every slice of classic be-bop, Davis developed “cool jazz”, fused rock, funk and African rhythms, and blew the traditionalists’ minds with his innovative use of electronica.

By the 1985 album, You’re Under Arrest, he had Sting shouting the Miranda rights in French and was even covering tracks by Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper.

For this concert, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra are turning to his orchestral jazz work, Sketches Of Spain and Porgy and Bess.

Davis may undoubtedly have been a singleminded talent, but his output in the 1960s with the Canadian pianist and arranger Gil Evans was among his most enduring.

Here, the SNJO with guest soloists Tom MacNiven and Laura Jurd pay tribute to the pair with an exploration of two evocative and compelling masterpieces.
