Orkney farmer Liam Muir takes on judging duties

Orkney farmer Liam Muir has been named as the judge for tomorrow’s pedigree bull sale at Thainstone.

Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ (ANM) annual multi-breed show and sale of pedigree bulls and females has 49 entries forward for the day.

Mr Muir, of Upper Onston, Stenness, will be tasked with judging a line-up of bulls comprising 19 Charolais, 13 Limousin, nine Simmentals, five Aberdeen-Angus, two Salers and one British Blue.

The sale will also feature the dispersal of the Greenbridge pedigree Limousin herd from EJ Green of Drumburn, Keith.

The dispersal includes nine heifers and cows with February and March-born calves at foot by Brims Ironman, one of which is in-calf to Hunters Hall Gladiator, and two maiden heifers.

At last year’s sale both the overall champion rosettes and top price were awarded to a Charolais bull from Mike Massie’s Elrick herd at Mains of Elrick, Auchnagatt, Ellon.

Elrick Juror, by the 16,000gn Thrunton Fearless and the first calf out of Elrick Frency, sold for 5,800gn to John Gordon of Wellheads, Huntly.

As well as a show and sale of pedigree bulls, ANM will also host its annual show and sale of commercial beef breeding cattle the same day. The contest will be judged by father-anddaughter duo David and Charlotte Cooper of Govals, Kincaldrum, Forfar.

The sale features a mixture of more than 300 adult cattle and cross heifers with springborn calves at foot.

The show of commercial cattle starts at 9am followed by the sale at 10am.

The pedigree bulls and females show starts at 11am followed by the sale at 2.30pm.
