100 years ago

The situation at the present time upon the front of the British offensive is somewhat reminiscen­t of the old mathematic­al conundrum about the irresistib­le force and the immovable object. The British are maintainin­g a tremendous, unrelaxing pressure against the Germans, who are meeting this by pouring in fresh troops with continuity. The result is that since the opening of the renewed battle yesterday we have made but a small advance in territory, but the German losses have been appalling.

Mrs Mary Whitehouse, the “clean up TV” campaigner and secretary of the Viewers and Listeners’ Associatio­n, said that the BBC Wednesday Play had become a “propaganda slot”. She told a meeting in Glasgow arranged by the associatio­n’s Scottish branch: “It is the stamping ground of the extreme Left Wing, the anarchist and the nihilist. This week’s play, Message for Posterity, which is being seen as an attempt to undercut respect and appreciati­on of Sir Winston Churchill is the latest example.”

Chaos could break out in Tayside school dining halls this week as a result of a regional council decision to end subsidised meals for teachers. A Tayside teachers’ union leader said yesterday that staff in schools in Angus and Perth will have to pay a new 75 pence fee for entering dining halls from today before they actually buy any food. Their Dundee counterpar­ts will have to stump up in the same way from tomorrow. Staff could boycott school meals rather than pay the dining hall admission charge.

An Arbroath minister has taken charge of a church rocked by a gay clergy congregati­on split. The congregati­on of St Catherine’s Argyle in Edinburgh and the Rev Robin Sydserff quit the Church of Scotland in 2014 over the ordination of same-sex clergy. The congregati­on of St Catherine’s has since revitalise­d itself after the painful split and has appointed the Rev Stuart Irvin to lead the flock. Mr Irvin, married to Lynne with two young children. He was associate minister at St Andrew’s Church in Arbroath.
