Forth bridge crash drama sees M90 traffic grind to a halt
Car stranded on central reservation after collision with HGV
A motorist had a terrifying ordeal when the car they were driving mounted the central reservation of the Forth Road Bridge after colliding with an HGV.
The Renault Megane was left perched on the raised reservation, with only metal bars between it and the drop to the water below.
There was no indication anyone was hurt in the accident which occurred at around 8.30am yesterday as commuters made their way to work.
However, traffic ground to a halt as the northbound lanes closed for almost an hour and queues formed in both directions.
A witness said the car skidded along the reservation before coming to a stop.
Ross Crawford, who was travelling from Fife to Glasgow, said: “I saw the back of the car flip up on to the middle of the bridge.
“It started sliding along the barrier. I thought it was going to come right over.
“I don’t know whether it hit something or was hit by something.”
Ross was stuck on the bridge for 15 to 20 minutes, as emergency services, including the Scottish Ambulance Service, came to the aid of the car’s occupants.
Although the southbound carriageway remained open, tailbacks were reported on the M90 almost as far back as the Masterton junction, while northbound traffic was backed up to the M90 spur.
Vehicles were recovered quickly and the bridge reopened at around 9.20am. Congestion cleared shortly afterwards.
A police spokeswoman said officers were in attendance at a collision on the Forth Road Bridge.
She said: “The incident happened around 8.30am on Friday May 5 when a car collided with an HGV.
