Sight loss inspires woman to share her experiences

-

A Kirkcaldy woman who barely left her house after losing her sight has become a public speaker with the help of her beloved guide dog.

Claire Smith, 40, began losing her sight in 2013 as a result of diabetic retinopathy.

As her sight deteriorated, the mum-of-two was left shaken after she took her children to school and could not find her way home, prompting her to apply for a guide dog.

Claire was matched with labrador Bella in 2015 and has regained her independence and mobility.

She has recently trained to become an official speaker for the charity Guide Dogs and will visit schools, community groups and organisations to talk about how Bella has changed her life.

“We’ve always gone on caravanning holidays but after losing my sight I wouldn’t go to the evening entertainment because I wouldn’t be able to find my way back in the dark,” she said.

“Now whenever we go away I can go out and enjoy myself like everyone else.

“I’m also studying at college and hope to go to university and become a lawyer.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out into the local community and sharing my story.”

Community fundraiser Anne Rowse said: “I’m delighted that Claire will be able to inspire people in the local area with her visits, while letting them know about Guide Dogs and our mission.”
