It was “Operation Mop Up” for some of the night staff in Dundee Royal Infirmary when flooding took place in the early hours of yesterday morning. Firemen were called in to assist in stemming the flow of water, which seeped its way down through several floors in the north wing. The trouble started when a connection linking a fire hose reel with a four-inch main became detached. Water started to pour from the fractured connection. Several beds had to be pushed aside, but no patients were moved.

A 43-year-old man had a miracle escape yesterday when he fell 35 feet from the top of the Falls of Muick, south of Ballater. Mr William Atkinson, on offshore assistant crane operator of Sunderland, had been standing near the top of the falls when he slipped on wet rocks. The current took him over the fall and into the pool at the bottom. Mr Atkinson was able to pull himself on to the rocks at the edge of the pool to await assistance. He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with a shoulder injury.

Two sea eagle chicks have hatched at a location in Fife. It is the fourth year running that parent birds Turquoise 1 and Turquoise Z have successfully bred. Having hatched and fledged single chicks in 2013 and 2014, the pair have now had twins in consecutive years. Rhian Evans, East Scotland sea eagle officer for RSPB, said: “It’s really great news that there are two chicks again this year. “Last year, one of the chicks died of natural causes in the nest so we hope that this year both will fledge successfully.”
