Getting it right for the bridesmaids
Deciding the best dresses for your maid of honour or bridesmaids can be great fun but also a bit of an etiquette minefield. Here are a few tips
Don’t blow the budget Whether you have one bridesmaid or are celebrating with half a dozen maids in waiting, don’t go mad when choosing those dresses.
It’s best to have a budget in mind and stick to it. Don’t forget extras such as jewellery, shoes and hair accessories that could add to the final cost. Have fun Make choosing your bridesmaid dresses a fun day out – whether you are planning to hit the bridal shops for traditional styles or want a high street alternative, make it a fun day. Add in a stop for lunch and perhaps a glass of bubbly to keep the mood light. Be diplomatic It is your wedding but remember your bridesmaids will be wearing the dresses you decide on all day and will be photographed in them. Decide together on a style and colour you both like and that they feel comfortable in.
Unless your bridesmaids happen to all be a perfect 10 it might not be possible for everyone to wear identical gowns, so be prepared to be flexible. Get organised If you are ordering dresses from a bridal shop there may be a lead-in time of several months. Make sure you have plenty of time to allow for alterations and fittings. Which colour? If the groom is wearing a kilt it might be a nice touch to pick one of the colours out of the tartan for the bridesmaids to wear. If not, or that idea doesn’t appeal, you could look to anything from the seasons – rich colours are great around the festive period while brights are lovely for spring and summer.
Pinks and blush shades are great for a romantic celebration. Modern takes on bridesmaid looks include all in white or a range of shades of one colour.
It’s also a good idea to flatter your bridesmaids’ skintones. Don’t fall in love with a bright colour until you find out whether it suits your bridesmaids.
Stonewashed colours such as blush and sand are universally flattering, while colours such as emerald and sapphire tend to look better on fair skin.
For olive or darker skins, bolder colours such as electric blue or fuchsia can work well.
Metallics can be a flattering option for most complexions or go for a print that will suit everyone.
