100 years ago

Two Courier employees have been wounded in recent fighting. LanceCorpo­ral James W. McNicoll, who was attached to the Sherwood Foresters is at present in hospital in France. Previous to enlistment he was employed as an apprentice compositor in the Courier office. Private Gordon McGuine, Gordon Highlander­s, who was employed in the process department of the Courier, resided with his brotherin-law, Mr G.D. Charlton, Barnhill. He was in support trenches when he was injured.

50 years ago

Beatle John Lennon took delivery of his rainbow-coloured Rolls yesterday. His £11,000 car has been painted mainly yellow with bunches of flowers on the door panels. Blue, red, green and white have been used in the colour scheme. The car also has the sign of the zodiac on the roof. The work was done by a firm of coachbuild­ers and paint sprayers at Chertsey, Surrey. Mr John Fallon, the firm’s managing director said: “It took about five weeks to do.” He refused to reveal the cost.

Mr Charlie Black, groundsman at Harris Academy playing fields at Elliot Road, Dundee, for 19 years says he has been “overwhelme­d” by the gifts he received on his retiral. Scores of staff, past and present, attended a party to bid Charlie farewell. Charlie (65), who lives at Mains of Ardestie with his wife Margaret, was delighted to accept a painting of the grounds by Dundee artist Neil McInteer. “I will treasure that painting,” he said. “I spent 19 good years there – the happiest years of my life.”

A Fife councillor has called on the local authority to ensure elderly people are given continuity of care after her grandfathe­r was visited by 14 different carers in 14 days. Julie Ford has hit out at the treatment of her grandfathe­r William, who has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. Mr Ford, of Markinch, receives home care through a private provider contracted through Fife Council, but Julie says she was shocked to hear that so many carers had seen him in the space of just a fortnight.
