Double for Carle as Letham honour their president

LETHAM AFC 3 DOUGLAS AMATEURS 1

Letham AFC celebrated last night after clinching the North of Tay Cup, defeating Douglas Amateurs, writes our Amateur correspondent.

There was a poignant moment at the start of the match at Station Park, Forfar, with the Letham lads bearing on their strips the name of Ken Drummond, their president and a founder member who died earlier this month.

From kick off it was fast, furious and controversial and Letham might have had a penalty on 10 minutes when Dale Smart was tackled from behind.

Then a defensive error let Danny Lowe through on goal but the Douglas man’s shot was tame.

Billy Carle, the Perth side’s prolific scorer, had a great opportunity to open their account from 15 yards but blasted over 10 minutes before half time.

Both Gary Kenneth and keeper Adams then made tremendous blocks after Letham attacks with John Foley’s long-range shot giving the Letham keeper a fright.

However, a previously subdued Carle popped up five minutes before the break to give his side the lead with a low 12-yard strike.

The second half started with Douglas on the front foot but not for long. A well-timed header from six yards by Carle made it two.

When Terry Connell was sent off for a second yellow card things looked bleak for the Dundee side until Lyall Murdoch tapped home after a left-flank breakaway to make it 2-1.

But no more than 20 seconds later it was 3-1 through Gavin Anderson’s daisy-cutter. This was followed by Murdoch taking an early bath as well which ended the Douglas chances.

Sean Ferrie of Letham deservedly got the man of the match award and Letham the plaudits for their controlled performance.
