Police escort for massive load
A huge electricity transformer will make its way through Fife and Perthshire under police escort next month.
It will be the latest movement of huge pieces of equipment to be delivered to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks’ Rannoch substation.
The transportation is described as a “complex and timely operation” that will require to be undertaken under the supervision of police.
Bosses have admitted it will travel slowly and some disruption is expected as it moves north from Skelmersdale in Lancashire on Tuesday.
From the north of England, the heavy load will travel under escort through Fife and on to the A9 before exiting onto the A872 as it heads towards Aberfeldy.
From that point it will be under police escort as it turns on to an unclassified road and then on to the B846 for the final 46km to the substation.
It should arrive at its destination at around midday.
The new transformer is part of an upgrade of SSE’s Corrour substation at Rannoch, which is needed to enable a number of small hydro generation developments in the area to be connected. The transformer is smaller than many of those delivered during the construction of the Beauly to Denny line but there will be disruption for road users.
A spokesman for SSE said: “The delivery team will work to ensure there are no unnecessary delays during this period.”
