RESCOBIE LOCH has been fishing really well over the past few weeks with the excellent water quality and settled weather all helping the anglers catch fish, writes our angling correspondent.

Fish are getting caught all over the loch with buzzers and small lures attracting the fish.

May fish of the month leader is Alec Brewster with a fine brown trout weighing in at 6 lbs 4 oz.

There have been a good number of clubs fishing over the last month, including the Invicta Club, who had 28 fish for 64lbs over two trips, Blairgowrie AC 31 for 74lbs 4oz, Hydro Dundee 18 for 43lbs 14oz, Perth Anglers 16 for 40lbs 15oz, Forfar Masons AC 18 for 60lbs 4oz, DHSFP 11 for 30lbs and Stanley AC 16 for 42lbs 12oz.

The LAKE OF MENTEITH is starting to cool down after the recent heatwave – but the best bags are coming from a fast glass and a lure from places like the Malling Shore, Burnmouth in Gateside and on the buzzer banks.

On the day of the national heat last Friday the water temperature reached 19C at six feet, but anglers still managed to net 246 trout averaging 2lbs 6oz in weight.

Top rod with 14 fish was Fort William angler Donnie Macbeth, who was fishing wet mayflies on a hover line in the Heronry and Dog Isle.

In the boat league last Wednesday the lake fished well, with 25 anglers catching 144 fish.

Top rod of the night was newcomer Stuart Ingles, Clydebank, who caught 13 fish using a midgetip line and a washing line of buzzers and boobies up in Gateside Bay at the Burnmouth.

Heat 4 of the Scottish Club Championship proved very challenging for competitors as 36 anglers caught 57 fish.

The top three clubs progressing through to the semi-final on August 18 are Househillmuir with 14 fish for 26lb 6.8oz, Alba Orvis with nine for 19lb 5.3oz and Bothwell & Blantyre with eight for 17lb 8.1oz.

The top five individuals who qualified for the Champion of Champions are George Cashmere, Paul O’Neil, Stevie Francis, Ian Glassford and Gregor Fleming.

The heaviest fish on the night was caught by Bill Ramage a fine rainbow of 3lb 2.7oz.

The last week of hot weather at FORBES OF KINGENNIE is seeing a change in the fish behaviour – as the water temperatures rise they have been a bit fussy.

The Bankside pool has been the stand-out pond with lots of anglers having great returns in often tricky conditions.

Buzzers have been the top method fished either under the bung with an egg or squirmy on the point fished at five feet.

The washing line has also been effective when the fish are a bit higher in the water. Dry flies have also been worth a cast at points when they have been very active.

The Burnside has also been getting very clear with lots of fish visible on the surface.

The fishing has been a little bit slower at times but fishing very well most evenings. The washing line with wee buzzers is the go to method. Dries are doing well in the right conditions when they come up.

The Woodside pool has been busy in the nice weather with full bags being recorded. Over the weekend a total of 37 anglers landed 68 fish for weight of 115lb.
