Dillon and Dixon leave Tannadice

Sean Dillon and Paul Dixon have left Dundee United as manager Ray McKinnon continues to rebuild his squad for another crack at promotion.

Club captain Dillon and left-back Dixon have held talks with McKinnon and both will be playing elsewhere next season.

The Irishman has given a decade’s worth of service to the Tangerines, while Dixon has just finished his second spell at Tannadice.

Confirming the news of Dillon’s departure, McKinnon said: “I had a chat with Sean and decided it would be best if he pursued other options because he wouldn’t play as much as he would like next season.

“He has been a fantastic professional and ambassador for Dundee United, and he has enjoyed many memorable moments including trophy success, European nights and his testimonial.

“As a club, we will have a massive rebuild required again for next season and I have already begun the process as this decision shows.

“I have to ensure the club continues to build itself beyond its current place and we will look to improve the squad again next season.”

Dillon said: “It has been fantastic to have played for, captained and won trophies at Dundee United.

“I have loved being here and will look back on my career here with mostly happiness.

“Winning the Scottish Cup in 2010 will live with me as my career highlight forever and relegation will remain the low point.

“While we narrowly missed out on an instant return to the Premiership, I am sure the club will return to the top tier in the near future.

“I still feel as fit as at any time in my career and look forward to playing as long as I can.

“I wish the club and, especially, the fans, who’ve been great to me, all the best for the future.”

The pair, who were among those whose contracts expired at the end of the season, join a list of departures that already includes Hibs’ new recruit Simon Murray, defender Frank van der Struijk, keeper Luis Zwick, youth striker Jordan Garden, and loan trio Tony Andreu, Thomas Mikkelsen and Alex Nicholls.

The squad makeover is expected to accelerate over the next few days, with McKinnon expected to be provided with the details of his budget following a board meeting at Tannadice today.

Meanwhile, young United goalie Brett Long has been called up for Northern Ireland’s under-21 match against Estonia in Tallinn on Thursday.

The Belfast-born stopper enjoyed loan spells with Forfar and Clyde last season.
