Grewar family running tours for open day
The Grewar family’s shop at Dronley Farm on the outskirts of Dundee will run tours of machinery, fields and polytunnels on Open Farm Sunday at the weekend.
Children will be able to clamber over a combine, tractors and seed drills at the event and there will be guided tours to fields of potatoes, cereals, leeks and carrots.
Visitors will also be shown the produce being grown for the shop in polytunnels, including tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, aubergines, cucumbers, peas and beans.
Overseeing the event will be shop manager Michael Dye, who said it was designed to educate children about farming and provide an opportunity to interact with the public who support the business.
“We ran a pumpkin day last year and discovered many kids had never been on a farm before,” he said.
“This is an opportunity to show them where the food they see on supermarket shelves comes from.”
The Grewar family have farmed Ardler for generations and opened the Dronley shop 18 months ago.
Only Scottish produce is stocked in the store which has become a well-known centre for 38 Scottish flavoured craft gins.
However, most demand at the moment is for fresh local soft fruit which is grown within a 10-mile radius of the shop.
The free open day takes place from 10am-4pm and tours of the farm will start every hour.
Places can be booked on the Open Farm Sunday websitefarmsunday.org or people can just turn up on the day.
