Scobbie hailed as ‘real leader’

UNITED: McKinnon swoops for defender

- ERIC NICOLSON

Dundee United manager Ray McKinnon believes new signing Tam Scobbie will be a “real leader” for the Tangerines as they seek to return to the Premiership at the second attempt.

The 29-year-old former Falkirk man, who arrives at Tannadice after a five-year spell with St Johnstone, had been in talks about extending his stay at McDiarmid Park for another season.

After those discussions failed to bring about a deal, McKinnon moved in to snap up the player on a two-year contract.

Scobbie, who made 20 appearances for Saints in another successful campaign last season, is United’s third signing.

James Keatings and Billy King agreed pre-contracts last month.

McKinnon said: “Thomas is an excellent defender who can play both left back and central, and will enhance our defensive options. As important, he is also a great organiser, a real leader with plenty of experience and these are vital characteristics for me.”

SIGNING TARGETS:

McKinnon continued: “We need to add more players, and I expect to further add to the squad before pre-season begins.”

Scobbie said: “I am excited to join United. It is a great club with fantastic support. When I spoke to the manager, I knew this was where I wanted to sign, and I am delighted to have my future secured.

“I look forward to meeting my new team-mates and being together in our attempt to get back into the Premiership.”
