A meeting of St Andrews Provincial Committee for the Training of Teachers was held at St Andrews – Principal Mackay, Dundee, presiding. The committee appointed as lecturer in mathematics at Dundee Training College for next session Miss I.R.C. Calcott, MA, Hons (St Andrews), Montrose, at a salary of £150. A scheme planned by the Carnegie Dunfermline Trustees for the training of officers who have served in the army and navy and are of good education as instructors in PE was discussed.

People who still have old £5 notes bearing a portrait of Britannia were urged by the Bank of England to exchange them for notes of the current series, or pay them into a bank account. The Bank said that since it announced in April that the old £5 notes would cease to be legal tender after June 26 only 5½ million had been presented for payment. That left 16½ million notes which had not been exchanged. After June 26 the notes would still be exchangeable at the head office of the Bank of England.

An emotional Andy Roxburgh broke down in tears last night as Scotland slipped out of the European Football Championships in Sweden. The Scots’ manager and his players left their dresing room three times to salute the tartan-clad fans who sang and chanted for an hour in the Idrottsparken Stadium in Norrkoping after the 2-0 defeat by Germany. He saw his team give everything in search of a win over the world champions and the fans’ response was astonishing.

An ambitious project to restore a historic Fife church has received a major funding boost. A £40,000 grant has been awarded to St Athernase Church in Leuchars as part of a campaign to restore the building. The money, from the National Churches Trust, comes as part of a wider community effort to preserve the iconic structure. Greeting the news, the Rev John Duncan, the minister at Leuchars St Athernase, said: “It is wonderful news and acknowledges the importance of the church.”
