Oslo 1,500m victory sees Wightman top the 2017 UK rankings

-

Scots athlete Jake Wightman ran the race of his life to win the 1,500m at the Oslo Diamond League.

The Edinburgh AC athlete, who posted a personal best over 800m a week ago, closed up on the leaders at the bell and held his form down the home straight to register a personal best three minutes and 34.17 seconds and top the 2017 UK rankings.

Kenya’s Elijah Manangoi was second in 3:34.30 with Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski third in 3:34.60.

Sprinter CJ Ujah was also in top form, finishing second in the 100m to equal his season’s best of 10.02 seconds.

Olympic 200m silver medallist and 100m bronze medallist Andre De Grasse repeated his 2016 100m victory in 10.01 seconds.

The Canadian was, however, pushed all the way to the finish by Ujah, winner at last week’s Rome Diamond League.

British runner Adam Gemili followed home in fourth in a time of 10.13.

Scottish 800m record holder Lynsey Sharp featured in a world-class field where South African Caster Semenya reigned supreme as she came home in one minute and 57.59 seconds.

Francine Niyonsaba (Burundi) made a brave bid to run away from the double Olympic champion but Semenya forged ahead in the home straight to finish one second ahead of Niyonsaba’s 1:58.18.

Sharp came home in eighth but had the consolation of posting a season’s best 2:00.41.

There were mixed fortunes for the other GB athletes.

Matthew HudsonSmith was second in the 400m, while UK long jump record-holder Shara Proctor was fourth with a leap of 6.04m.

Former European 100m hurdles champion Tiffany Porter finished fifth and a below-par Robbie Grabarz, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, came seventh in the high jump.
