Glasgow Boys arrive in Kirkcaldy

-

Kirkcaldy Galleries will be showcasing pioneering paintings by the Glasgow Boys from Saturday.

The exhibition, which runs until November 5, features works by leading members of the group and many others associated with it.

Paintings will be on show by artists including John Lavery, Edward Atkinson Hornel, George Henry, William York Macgregor, David Young Cameron, Edward Arthur Walton, Arthur Melville, James Guthrie and Joseph Crawhall.

All of the paintings come from the fine art collection cared for by Fife Cultural Trust on behalf of Fife Council.

The Glasgow Boys – A Spirit of Rebellion will offer visitors a rare opportunity to see many of these paintings brought together in one venue. A total of 30 works will be on display.

Linked by friendship and a shared desire to rebel against the existing art establishment in late 19th Century Scotland, the Glasgow Boys became internationally famous.

They enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success at home and abroad, and their determination to break with tradition paved the way for other young Scottish artists.

To encourage younger visitors to explore the paintings, a variety of hands-on activities have been lined up.

These will range from a giant art-themed snakes and ladders game to gallery back-packs full of fun quizzes and games that families can enjoy together.
