Appeal after skimming device discovered at cash machine on Market Street

Those who used a St Andrews cash machine are being urged to check their bank accounts after a skimming device was discovered.

The device was fitted to the Barclays bank ATM in Market Street.

A member of the public discovered it on Friday and alerted police.

It is now believed people who used the cash machine prior to Friday may have had money taken from their bank accounts.

Sergeant Neil Johnston from St Andrews Police Station said: “If you believe you may have used this ATM prior to Friday then check your bank account immediately and report any suspicious transactions you notice to police immediately.”

The sergeant said inquiries were continuing to identify those responsible and he urged anyone with information to come forward.

It is not the first time a cash machine on the street has been targeted.

A skimming device was discovered at a Market Street ATM in April last year.

It is understood a different ATM was targeted this time around.

Mr Johnston added: “If you suspect an ATM has been interfered with, do not use it.

“If the cash machine is attached to a bank and the bank is open, then alert the staff who will check the machine, if not you should report your suspicions to the police via 101.

“As a matter of routine you should always conceal your hand when entering your pin to prevent anybody seeing or recording it.”

Those with information can contact police in St Andrews via 101 and quote incident number 3554 of June 16. Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
